About Gum Disease

STAGES OF GUM DISEASE

Gum disease is a dangerous health condition that destroys your gums and leads to tooth loss but it is also preventable. It is helpful to know more about gum disease in order to properly detect and treat it effectively.

Gingivitis- Gums are red and puffy due to a build-up of bacteria. Gingivitis is reversible with proper brushing and flossing.

Periodontitis- Untreated gingivitis has progressed. ‘Pockets’ form between your teeth and gums accumulating even more bacteria. The supporting tissues surrounding your teeth are irreversibly damaged and your gums may start to recede. It is necessary to see Dr. Kim to prevent any further damage.

Advanced Periodontitis- The final stage of gum disease. The infection has run rampant and teeth will become loose. Bone loss has occurred. You must see Dr. Kim to save your teeth.

DANGERS OF GUM DISEASE

The infection that invades your teeth and gums can leave your mouth and travel to other parts of your body causing inflammation and increasing your risk for:

- Heart Disease
- Diabetes

- Dementia and Memory Loss
- Premature Birth and Low-Birth Weight Babies
- Pancreatic Cancer
- Head and Neck Cancer
